THE BICENTENNIAL YEAR-America's 200th birthday! And U.S. railroads were among the first and remain among the foremost celebrants of the occasion.
It all began in June 1971 when Seaboard Coast Line took delivery of a General Electric U36B numbered 1776 and factory painted in red, white and blue. By 1974 other roads began to follow suit; BN late that year drafted its own plans for two patriotically painted Bicentennial units. Rather than using the obvious candidates-GP9's 1776 and 1976-BN opted to renumber and repaint two high-horsepower units which would present a more modern image, could more readily operate system-wide and would represent both builders.
