Second Edition
The first edition of Building The Clinchfield was released I December 1983. The demand far exceeded expectations with all copie being gone in four months. A second printing followed.
The release of the first edition was coincidental with the demis, of the Clinchfield as it was merged with and totally absorbed by the Seaboard System (CSX) in January 1983. It was this occurrence that probably created a greater feeling for the Clinchfield's past. Also, it was learned that Clinchfield had a wide spread following as mail orders were received from California, Hawaii, Alaska and Canada.
After the first edition came out many persons have made available to me numerous construction era photos and other data. With this additional information it was decided to rework and enlarge the book and improve the quality rather than go for another printing.
Following the merger with CSX in 1983, the Clinchfield has undergone some drastic changes. First operated as the "CLINCH- FIELD DIVISION" headquartered in Erwin, it was split up after ' one year and merged into the connecting divisions with the division office in Erwin being eliminated. Further reductions were to come in 1985, when the locomotive shop in Erwin was closed and the workers moved to other areas.
Erwin, once the headquarters of the mighty Clinchfield is now just a refueling and crew changing point. The glory days of the Clinchfield are gone and can only be relived through written accounts.
