It all started, in the year of 1858, when James A. Howell, my grandfather, was born. When he was a boy, he took a job on the Pan Handle Railroad, and became a lamp lighter. This job consisted of keeping all the switch lamps clean and filled with oil. He lived and worked at Cadiz Jct., Ohio, and, when he retired, had 58 years of service. In 1890, my father, Cecil R. Howell, was born, and at the age of sixteen, began working on the section at Cadiz Jct., on the Pennsylvania Railroad. After work, he would go to the Cadiz Jct. block station and learn the Morse Code from the telegraph operator, and at the age of eighteen, became a telegraph operator. He worked all over the Pan Handle, and retired with fifty and one-half years of service. I was born, in 1929, in Oakdale, PA., and at a very young age, began going to different block stations with my dad. In 1947, after graduating from high school, I took a job, as a block operator, on the Pan Handle Division. I retired, in 1991, with forty-four years of service: Total service, of the Howell Family. with the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Pan Handle Division, was one hundred fifty-two and one-half years.
This story will begin with the building of the different railroads, which were to makeup the Pan Handle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and finishing, almost to its demise.
