Introduction
While this 'Special' can be treated as a single entity concerned with kit construction and techniques, it is intended as a follow-on from our previous publication Starting Model Railways.
Once again I have separated this 'one-shot' from the countless others which have been produced over the years that have touched on or dealt with this subject in varying degrees of detail, by following through the complete building of the major items from start to finish. Taking them through the various stages of construction and, where applicable, offering
alternatives to the items we have used ... just as in the previous publication. Whilst all the subjects featured have been built in 4mm scale the techniques used are applicable to any other scale, be it 2mm (N gauge) up to 7mm (0 gauge).
The object of this publication is to show not only the progression a new modeller can make from the out-of-the-box ready-to-run loco or items of rolling stock, but how he/she can progress through simple conversion stages by adding extra detail, to simple chassis construction; then onto cast whitemetal kit building to our final piece which gives a taste of professional scratchbuilding and how to go about it with Vic Green and also show step-by-step the various categories being constructed.
Finally, we will show the painting and finishing stage. While a model can be beautifully built to most exacting standards there are many that have been totally ruined by poor, nay terrible, paint jobs and, in particular. lining.
So why not join me along with Andrew Elliott, Steve Barnfield, David Spencer and build a very 'MIXED TRAIN.'
