INTRODUCTION

Nearly forty years have passed since the original version of this book first appeared in 1959. The original edition was limited to approximately 700 copies and specimens today are hard to come across. A whole new generation of trolley enthusiasts has grown up since 1948 when the last BRT traction line vanished from the streets of Queens and few of this new group have ever seen the original edition or had a chance to read its pages.

To serve this new audience and give new life to the long and fascinating pageant of street car history provides the main motive for this revised re-issue of a nostalgic volume. The text has been somewhat abridged and photo selection emphasis has changed from locations to car types and operations. A BRT general roster is included plus the original maps.
