Mention the name Broadway Limited in a group of middle-aged and older railfans, and in their mind will be a flashing streak of Tuscan red Pullmans speeding their way from New York to Chicago. To most people, Broadway evokes images of brightly-lit marquees of the New York theatre district. Yet the Pennsylvania Railroad never had the Great White Way in mind when it renamed its Pennsylvania Special in 1912, and The Broad Way Limited was in reference to the Pennsylvania's multiple-track right of way over which the train operated.
Some of the larger newspapers of the era immediately began spelling the train's name as though it were one word. With America's fascination by the movies and stage in the 1920's and 1930's, the railroad soon realized that the newspaper misinterpretation of the train's monicker was not such a bad idea. Soon the Pennsylvania Railroad was spelling Broadway the way everyone else does-- as one word. Today, the name Broadway Limited still retains a certain exotic and exciting connotation.
A history of the Broadway Limited cannot be written without at least due reference to its arch-rival, the New York Central System's Twentieth Century Limited. The Century and the Pennsy's Pennsylvania Special were both inaugurated on the same day, June 15, 1902. Many historians also consider this the birthdate of the Broadway Limited.
