On Back Cover
Broader than Broad is a short but detailed account of perhaps the most extraordinary railway project ever conceived Adolf Hitler's Breitspur Fernbahn, or Broad Gauge Long Distance Railway. And, at 3 metre gauge, broad this certainly would have been.
Whilst this project is shown against the dictator's typically grandiose, self-glorifying projects, there was a certain logical rationale behind the idea, in that it would lock the far-flung regions of the Third Reich to Germany. However the technical and financial difficulties involved in particular mean Hitler's deranged dream could never have been realised. Whilst a huge amount of time and effort was devoted to the scheme, very little solid emerged, other than wooden models for the Fames edification.
A dream it was, but leaving everything else aside, who would not have wanted to see one of the 305 feet long steam locomotives of the Breitspur Fernbahn thunder past at 250 kph, heading a 1,000 tonne train of double deck passenger coaches 23 feet high?
Robin Barnes not only describes the background to the dream, but includes considerable technical details and places the whole project in the wider context of Hitler's architectural and technical gigantomania. Also covered as background are details of earlier broad gauge railways. Robin has also painted seventeen accurate scenes of locomotives and trains of the Breitspur Fernbahn based on the original proposals, reproduced here in full colour, as well as other black and white illustrations.
A fascinating story of what might have been, but thankfully never was.
