In this book I have endeavoured to present what appear to me the salient points of engine and carriage design, against the background of contemporary railway and national history, and to allow the pictures to display those distinctive locomotive styles that characterised nineteenth-century railways in Great Britain. Problems of operating, including that perennial headache the slow-moving goods train, are excluded. With choice of subject-matter so wide, in both engines and coaching stock, one naturally picks out the highest achievements of the designer's art, and, generally speaking, detailed references are confined to passenger engines.
