A great deal of nostalgic sentiment is nowadays being expressed over the passing of the steam locomotive, over the closing of picturesque branch lines, and the sweeping away of railway traditions dating from the Victorian age. And while the sentimentalist laments, the neophytes in their enthusiasm for diesels are inclined to regard the whole era of steam as a regrettable error in transportation policy ! Between these two extremes lies the monument of solid achievement by railways worked entirely by steam, and in this book Mr Nock, with the critical eye of an engineer steeped in modern practice, gives a new and comprehensive appraisal of the railways of this country in the age of steam. He looks not only at locomotives, but at carriages, stations, architecture, signals and permanent way,recreating the atmosphere of the most colourful days, when railways were not merely beautiful and still romantic, but also earned what would now be regarded as princely dividends.
