Today Colin Garratt is one of the world's foremost professional railway photographers, whose work takes him all over the globe. But in the 1950s and '60s he was one of a small number of enthusiasts astute enough to record on film the final years of main line steam in Britain. This second volume of Colin's early photographs introduces some of his first exciting colour work and is warmed throughout by his very personal memories of the days when Britain had a 'proper' railway network. Readers of Colin Garratt's earlier book (THE LAST DAYS OF BRITISH STEAM RAILWAYS, published by PSL in 1985) will need no further introduction to realize that here is a superb collection of photographs of dozens of different locomotive types as they were seen, throughout the British Isles, by a young man with a camera and a genuine empathy with working steam.
