DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
British Steam Horses A BOOK OF MODERN LOCOMOTIVES
This is the book of the railway engine for locomotive enthusiasts of any age. It is one of the few books about locomotives and railways written by a professional railwayman. Mr. Dow has packed into his pages an enormous amount of diverse and fascinating information about British locomotives and British railway systems. In addition to his text there are 57 photographs, many of which have never previously been published, and seven diagrams and plans. He explains the structure of the steam locomotive, describes its building stage by stage, gives details of all the important modern passenger and freight types on British Railways to-day, and explains how a locomotive depot operates. There is a chapter on famous loco designers, and an exciting one on speed and endurance records containing many stories of rivalry between the old independent companies and of astonishing feats performed by the handsome `thoroughbreds' of the permanent way. Appendices explain the renumbering of British Railways locomotives since nationalization, and how the new liveries have been allotted to the various types.
