ON THE BACK COVER:
When the railways were nationalised in 1948 almost 120 years of railway history came to a close with the disappearance of the Great Western Railway. The GWR had been the only one of the `Big Four' companies effectively to emerge largely unchanged at the Grouping in 1923 and over its long history had established an ethos and following that was second to none. Despite the disappearance of the GWR in 1948, the newly created Western Region of British Railways still managed to maintain its individuality and, even after the 1955 Modernisation Plan, followed its own course, developing a fleet of diesel locomotives powered by hydraulic rather than the more usual electric transmission. For railway modellers, the GWR and BR(WR) have always been popular prototypes for modelling, the Region's numerous branch lines offering a fascinating range of prototypes evincing the romance of the byways of the West Country.
In Ian Allan Publishing's British Railways Western Region in Colour for the Modeller and Historian, Laurence Waters, a recognised authority on the Western, has sourced some 160 colour photographs to portray the Western Region during the two decades after the Nationalisation of the railways. Drawn from the collections of many well-known photographers of the period and from the archives of the Great Western Trust at Didcot, the book features the great variety of the WR's facilities and services during those years. Alongside the photographs, the author's detailed captions add considerably to the information available, making the book an invaluable work of reference to any railway modeller contemplating the construction of a layout based on WR practice during those years.
