INTRODUCTION
Although it is the third largest county in England, the present-day population of
Devonshire is only just over one million, thus reflecting its largely rural character
with an economy traditionally based on agriculture. Despite this, railways
proliferated during the railway building boom just as elsewhere in the country. Small
Itowns were determined to join the ever-growing network, realising that they would soon lose their influence and trade if they did not. I The railway history of the area features the growth of two major companies, the Great Western and the London & South Western, each seeking to spread its influence, even if only to deny the progress of the other! This competition was further complicated by the GWR's choice of the 7-foot `broad gauge'.
