INTRODUCTION
Somerset is an attractive and largely unspoilt county devoid of any major urban conurba-
tions. Within its relatively narrow confines it has a magnificently varied landscape with the limestone Mendip Hills marking its northern boundary. South of these lie the wide expanse of the levels, while the sandstone hill ranges of the west culminate in the delights of the Exmoor National Park.
The coming of the railway to the area was initiated by a group of Bristol merchants who promoted the Bristol & Exeter, which opened as far as Bridgwater in 1841. It was engineered by Brunel and built to his broad gauge. Originally it was leased to the Great Western Railway, then after a subsequent period of independence it was absorbed by the GWR, which had by then already taken over the Wilts, Somerset & Weymouth Railway. The B&FF, had also fostered the Somerset Central, and potentially the broad gauge could have completely dominated the county's railway network.
