INTRODUCTION
Apeninsula largely separated from Devon and the rest of England by the River Tamar, Cornwall is probably the most distinctive county in the country. Its isolation has helped to foster an independent spirit among its inhabitants, not least in their celebration of Celtic traditions and the revival of their own language.
The mining of tin, copper and lead in the county dates from before Roman times, but activity reached a peak in the 18th and 19th centuries when the development of the steam engine and pump enabled workers to go deeper underground. A notable pioneer who did much to develop steam power was Richard Trevithick, who was born in Camborne in 1771. Most of Cornwall's early railways were constructed to carry ore, but their lives were relatively short as cheaper production methods in other countries led to the gradual closure of most mines.
