The profound change that has come over the railway scene in Great Britain suggested the title British Railways in Transition, for although much has been done, the Modernisation Plan is very far from being completely worked out, and in many areas no more than a transition stage has so far been reached. I should say however, at the very outset, that anyone looking for an impartial, or even a partisan view of the political and economic factors that have influencednay, bedevilledrailway affairs in this country ever since the General Election of 1945, will not find it in these pages. This is predominantly a book about engineering and operation.
