INTRODUCTION
In the Introduction to British Railway Signalling in Colour, I recorded that the starting point for that book had been shopping trips to Leamington Spa. Whilst my father and I were waiting for my mother in the car, he taught me the block code, which I had mastered long before such boring things as the multiplication tables. The foundations for this book were laid at the same time. Some of my earliest recollections of coaching stock are of carmine and cream Mk Is at Leamington Spa, and it has been a pleasure to include such a rake in this book. Criticised at the time, many people now regard it as one of the most eye-catching coaching stock liveries ever, and the sundry liveries of the past 50 years have been a poor attempts to compete with it.
My parents had family roots in the Isle of Man, and the railways of the island were another early interest, with coaches in an equally vivid red and cream livery. In the 1950s, when there was little published on the railway, my father realised that its' largely Victorian carriage fleet was of great historic importance, and set out to photograph every coach. He actually achieved this, though one coach was broken up just after he filmed it, and the post office lost the film! Using photographs, notes and dimensions, he created a register of building dates, makers and designs.
