The first part of Volume 1 covers the pre-grouping era of which a rapidly decreasing number of enthusiasts have personal memories, but the author's own 'train spotting' days go back to 1907! However, this book is far more than a mere record of things seen. O.S. Nock, as a professional engineer of more than 50 years' experience, writes of the technicalities of locomotive design and performance. Furthermore, he was associated with many of the railway giants of the 20th century. The continuous narrative is thus enlivened by personal anecdotes and asides. At the same time it has been necessary to make the work encyclopaedic and each chapter contains a highly detailed tabular summary of the dimensions of most of the locomotives introduced in the periods concerned.
