People love steam. Steam rollers, steam lorries, traction engines and virtually everything else in which steam is the driving force. But for most people the greatest affection of all must go to steam railway locomotives, those majestic machines that reigned supreme on the railways of Britain for nearly a century and a half.
It wasn't just the engines, though, that gave our railways their rich character. Equally memorable were the brightly painted wayside stations bedecked with enamel advertisements, platforms crowded with milk churns, the opulent luxury of the boat trains, and engine drivers who were always sympathetic to the admiring glances of their passengers.
Fortunately the strength of feeling at the passing of the steam era was so great that many groups were formed all over the country with the aim of saving this or that locomotive, this or that length of track. The great majority have been successful, which is all the more remarkable in that most of these enthusiasts started out with no money and little idea of how to run a railway.
Now, wherever you go in the UK, you are never very far from an established steam preservation centre, and this book is intended to act as a guide to some of the delights of the steam age that can still be savoured at the major sites. Each entry begins with a paragraph providing all the essential information. Rather than easily misinterpreted sketch maps, the Ordnance Survey grid reference has been included to eliminate difficulty in finding some rather obscure locations. Timetables change from year to year and many of the railways listed operate off-peak diesel services, so it is worth finding out when steam trains will be running before setting off on a fruitless journey. In all cases further information about train services and new developments can be obtained by telephone.
More than anything, though, this book is about enjoying steam locomotives which, after all, are one of the most important relics of our industrial past.
