Introduction
This book incorporates every standard gauge Cornish branch line and byway that was connected to the erstwhile British Railways (GWR/SR) network as well as three historically important narrow gauge lines. It was agreed with the publisher that without detracting in any way from dedicated and definitive histories of certain Cornish branches, many of which are included in the Bibliography, to have an all-in-one illustrated reference book would be novel and serve a really useful purpose. Of the branches featured, three quarters have closed while the others have either partly closed or, at the time of writing, remain open. Although all branches and byways, as defined above, have been included, it must be remembered that in industrial areas of Cornwall just about every works, quarry and mine had some form of rail or wagonway for the transportation of materials and minerals. In fact it was reported that the Happy Union mine near Pentewan had a complete underground tramroad back in 1783! There were hundreds of lines ranging in length from a few dozen yards to a couple of miles or more. The layout of these normally narrow gauge lines changed daily and it would not therefore be possible to include them, even in a book of this size.
