Summary
Although most of the branch lines in Wiltshire were associated with the Great Western Railway, this company, to its chagrin, did not have exclusive rights in the area. The Midland & South Western Junction Railway audaciously cut through the heart of the GWR's territory, even Swindon itself, linking the industrial Midlands with the busy port of Southampton, while in the south of the county the London & South Western Railway reigned supreme.
It was, therefore, an area of some diversity as far as rail traffic was concerned. It was also in this county that many military branches sprang up on Salisbury Plain in the first forty years of this century.
Here for the first time under one cover are all Wiltshire's branch lines. The lively and informative text outlines the county's main railway routes and then describes in detail the branch lines serving each, giving the history along with many amusing or tragic incidents which occurred on the branch in question.
Comprehensively illustrated with more than 180 fascinating photographs and ephemera associated with the lines, most of which are no longer in existence, this volume provides a wide-ranging view of over a century of rail travel in Wiltshire.
