Published annually from 1848 to 1923 by the same firm as the famous railway timetable, this Manual maintained, year after year, a detailed cumulative record of the history and contemporary position of every railway in the British Isles-the peak was 476 companies in 1867; certain canals and overseas railways were also included.
The immense mass of intelligence, supplemented by many tables of statistics and other data not readily found elsewhere, was provided, like the Stock Exchange Official rear Book and similar publications in other spheres of commercial life, primarily for the use of those having a financial or managerial interest in railways.
Today the principal use of the Manual is as a valuable source of information for the railway historian. But the inexperienced should beware of pitfalls. In a new introduction, C .R. Clinker explains where and why care is needed in the use of this unique work of reference.
