Following the success of the earlier volume in this series, entitled Modern Rai/ Album, the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle has assembled a fresh collection of photographs in a pictorially progressive style, providing glimpses of some of the facets of railway operation with modern traction in mainland Britain.
The book is divided into four sections. The first and last depict diesel and electric locomotives at work hauling passenger and freight trains; between them come a section in which we have turned our attention to trains in passenger stations of diverse character, and a section depicting diesel and electric multiple-units at work in both urban, industrial and rural surroundings. The geographical coverage of the volume is once again broad, and most classes of locomotive, and many multiple-unit classes, at work on B.R. in the mid-1970s, are depicted. The emphasis in this selection, though, is, as befits the character of the PRPC, at least as much on photographs as pictorial impressions of the railway scene as on the inherent interest of the motive power; and it is as such that we commend our new volume to the reader, in the hope that it will provide him with some new and unsuspected viewpoints on a familiar and well-loved subject.
