In Volume I of Boston Trolleys in Color, we attempted to trace the metamorphosis of the Boston public transportation system from the streetcar era as it existed around 1940 through the light rail era as it began in the late 1970s. This story centered around the early 1940s conversion from streetcar dominance to trackless trolley dominance on Boston's North Side. Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, streetcars were "out," and trackless trolleys were "in." As the decade of the 1960s came into play the trackless trolleys gave way to the diesel bus as the predominate mode. The 1960s gave birth to the age of publicly owned transit systems across the nation and the trend went away from bus transportation and towards the expansion of the rapid transit systems, both existing and new-start cities. Boston was no exception as major construction projects were undertaken on all of Boston's rapid transit lines.
