INTRODUCTION
If the Bodmin & Wenford Railway was a cat, it would have already used several of its lives! The railways operating to the two destinations have `diced with death' on a number of occasions, and it is through no small slice of luck that the present happy sight of the preservation movement in the area has been enjoyed by many thousands.
In at the birth of railways in this country, the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway was one of a small coterie of operations that showed the way ahead and set the seal on the `railway mania' that was to follow. It was the brainchild of Sir William Molesworth of Pencarrow, a local landowner and, later, member of Palmerston's Government. Just a handful of lines had been built when the B&W opened its first route, including the Stockton & Darlington, Liverpool & Manchester, Canterbury & Whitstable and Leicester & Swannington, the latter opening just two years earlier in 1832. Note that none had yet surfaced in London!
