THE BOSTON & MAINE Is a New England classic, a railroad that has become a legend in its own time. The carrier will be remembered for many things-a huge fleet of Budd Rail Diesel Cars (the world's largest). the
4.7-mile Hoosac Tunnel, covered railroad bridges, stocky steam locomotives, blue diesels, busy mainline arteries from Boston to
Maine and New York State. and branches that poked and prodded the sleepy folds of Massachusetts.
Vermont and New Hampshire.
But perhaps most of all well remember B&M's tenacity-another
New England trait-which kept the railroad alive for more years than some would have expected. This fierce independence kept B&M out of
Conrail despite bankruptcy. and under the guidance of B&M
President and Chief Executive
Officer Alan Dustin. B&M once again became a railroad that worked.
Dustin and his management team led the B&M into a new era, one of upgraded trackage. new locomotives, route expansion and progressive marketing.
BLUEBIRDS & MINUTEMEN documents this new life of B&M. beginning with
Dustin's appointment to president in
1974 to the purchase of B&M by
Timothy Mellon in 1983-and with a short overview of B&M operations through 1984 as part of Mellon's
Guilford Transportation Industries.
