The Suncook Valley Railroad Historical Society was founded on the intent of documenting the history and operations of its namesake railroad in book form. My initial reaction when presented with the opportunity to publish this book, was to adopt a purely mechanical approach to the project since all my previous railroad exposure and publishing experience had been directed exclusively toward Class I carriers. That stance changed quickly as the material for the book came together and it became apparent that this was not simply a railroad story. It was instead a fascinating cross-section of rural New England life and times expressed in the birth, maturity and slow decline of a line which acquired the status of a local institution yet never operated 30 miles of track at its greatest extent! This book documents the relationship of that railroad over time with the people and events affecting it and the Valley which sustained it. As such, it is not intended as a definitive history although its preparation entailed much historical research. It is hoped that readers will experience as much pleasure in reading it as all those involved with its production did in the process of putting it together for you.
