Blue and Gray Magazine The Great Locomotive Chase June-July 1987 63 pages
The plot concocted by civilian spy. James Andrews was to sneak into Georgia with a band of volunteers, steal a locomotive and race toward Union lines, burning bridges and creating havoc for Confederate supply trains. At Big Shanty the saboteurs managed to hoard a locomotive, the General, hut then the plans began to go awry. What Andrews had not foreseen was the bravery of Southern trainmen who would give unrelenting chase-at first on fool, then by pole car and finally on three commandeered engines. Just when Andrews thought it might be safe to tear up track or destroy a vital span. the raiders would hear a whistle screaming from the south and see the billow of soot from a smokestack. As wheels pounded and fires roared, the raiders fled, with the Southerners edging closer and closer.
