This book celebrates the centennial anniversary of the Birmingham Southern Railroad. In February, 1899, five officers of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company came together to incorporate that company's railroad assets into a transportation system that served their various mining and manufacturing operations in the Birmingham area. The narrative chronicles the Birmingham Southern's reason for existence. It outlines how the mineral resources lying under the rolling topography of north-central Alabama came to be discovered and utilized to make iron and steel.
