Berkshires of the Nickel Plate Road celebrates these legendary steam locomotives, and documents their fascinating story from the dawn of the Super-Power era through to dieselization and today's museum and excursion survivors.
In the capable hands of a Nickel Plate crew, the Berkshires carried the responsibility for the Road's post-depression solvency squarely on their shoulders. They did not disappoint, and made "Nickel Plate Road High Speed Service" the envy of the industry.
This book completes a trilogy examining three important aspects of the postwar operations of one of North America's genuinely outstanding railroads. One of the early plans for this volume was to include a photograph of every Nickel Plate Road and Wheeling & Lake Erie 2-8-4 ... a "Berkshire Mugbook" of sorts. Like many "early plans," this one proved too limiting and was discarded. The result would have been on-line scenes at many of the same locations and repetitive roster views - not necessarily a bad thing, but at odds with the goal of presenting as diverse a pictorial record of these locomotives as possible within the pages available, while at the same time documenting their development and evolution.
