DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
With 200 half-tones and supporting text, The Berkshire Era scans the quarter-century that was the Nickel Plate Road's finest hour. Designed as a pictorial supplement to The Nickel Plate Story, this book is unashamedly heavy on steam power illustration - the work of some 25 amateur and professional photographers. While full tribute is paid to the famed Berkshire locomotives and fast manifest freight trains that were the Nickel Plate's stock in trade, the editors have not overlooked the supporting players in the dramatic story of this remarkable railroad. Recalled in visual form are the Road's "varnish" runs, local freights, mine rums, yard power, branch lines, engine terminals, and lineside real estate. Within these covers, once again the great 700-series 2-8-4's streak along the south shore of Lake Erie with the "Flying Saucer," KC-44, and CB-12; the Westerner and Nickel Plate Limited roll smartly behind polished Hudsons and Pacifies; Berkshires and Mallets forward mountains of coal and iron ore; and nimble Mikados move peddler runs across Corn Belt prairies and up the 2 per cent grade of Baltic Hill.
