to the places of Old Perry
For forty-three years, narrow gauge trains served Perry County, one of the most beautiful counties of Central Pennsylvania. There, within thirty miles of the capitol at Harrisburg, the fabled Newport & Sherman's Valley Railroad steamed west from the Susquehanna River. It dodged the rolling foothills, followed the twisting watercourses and aimed toward the Great Stand of Hemlock, high on Conococheague Mountain where Sherman's Valley begins. The railroad was built to bring the lumber to market. David Gring did that.
