ON FEBRUARY 13, 1891 THE BANGOR AND I AROOSTOOK RAILROAD (THE B&A) WAS ORGANIZED UNDER THE GENERAL LAWS OF MAINE for the purpose of building a standard gauge railroad from Brownville on the Katandin Iron Works Railway to Caribou. There would be branches from Dyer Brook Plantation to Masardis and Ashland and Easton to Fort Fairfield. The B&A's capital stock was set at $1,050,000.
The official date for the start of construction w July 1, 1893. The first train over The B&A arrived Houlton on December 15, 1893. A crowd sang a fan iar hymn of the time: "Bless'd Be the Ties That Bind first regular Bangor and Aroostook train entered Hoi January 1, 1894.
