The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company began hauling passengers between Baltimore and Ellicotts Mills, Md., in 1830. From that 13-mile rail line, the company grew into a 13-state system that spanned the Northeast from New York to Chicago and St. Louis.
In the fascinating 1950s, when both steam and diesel locomotives roamed the system, B&O's more than 5,500 route miles were divided into three regions  Eastern, Central and Western. This book will survey the facilities of B&O's Eastern Region and its affiliated New York Terminal Region. Subsequent volumes will look at the company's Central Region  with its affiliated Chicago Terminal Region  and Western Region.
The railroad's growth occurred slowly, its routes often dictated by sluggardly reactions to other carriers' political prowess and development. The "main stem" reached westward to Harpers Ferry, Va., in 1837, a full quarter-century before that part of the Old Dominion became West Virginia. The company entered Cumberland, Md., in 1842; Wheeling, (West) Va., in 1852; and Parkersburg, (West) Va., in 1857.
