VIRTUALLY EVERY large city had its streetcar era, each one usually with its own distinct personality. But Baltimore's seemed to be a summary of them all: whatever features other trolley systems had, they were likely to be found somewhere in Baltimore too. Perhaps that's not surprising, since Baltimore always had an unsettled personality. It was partly Old South, partly nineteenth century New England mill town, partly midwestern industrial city, partly cosmopolitan international port, partly office and regional financial center, and partly its own peculiar blend of big city and small town atmospheres.
