Early day backwoods railroads opened up the Far West and helped build the legendary fortunes of Western America. These railroads were the short lines, the mining roads, the narrow gauge lines, electrics, branch lines and lumber haulers, the unbelievably self-sufficient small railroads which once were the muscle of western mountains and forests, but now find themselves losing their identity through merger with larger lines and in some cases, sadly, abandonment.
The rough, unchanging country through which they chugged, hissed and screamed was-and is-as brutal as it is beautiful, as harsh as it is romantic, as bad as it is big. Although its altitudes, its distances, its contours are awesome, they seem larger than life when they are seen as backdrops for the small but mighty engines and the sturdy cars of the backwoods railroads.
The strength, beauty and romance of these minor railroads is captured in the book, Backwoods Railroads of the West, recently published by Kalmbach Publishing Company and printed at The Lakeside Press.
The illustrations in this keepsake booklet were selected from the 203 new Steinheimer photographs which appear in Backwoods Railroads of the West. (In the original book, they are accompanied by brief descriptions by the photographer and an introduction by David P. Morgan, well known among railroad fans as the authoritative editor of the popular railroading magazine, Trains.)
The dramatic quality of the photographs which appear throughout the deluxe 180-page book is beautifully demonstrated by the few selected for this special volume, prepared as a gift for customers and friends of The Lakeside Press, R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company. They are printed here from the original gravure positives made by Donnelley for the book, and on the same white Mohawk eggshell finish paper.
The Lakeside Press is pleased to have been selected to produce the book and is grateful to its publishers for permission to reproduce the photographs in this souvenir portfolio.
