Copy number one was always presented to the photographer/collector and copy number two always placed in the Barnard, Roberts library. No one has ever told us that they noticed we actually gave at least 51 rather than 50 photos and, in the case of B&O 5, a total of 52. So the B&O series came to a grand total of 256 views.
Since it has never been Barnard, Roberts policy to restrict use of historic photos other than for the first few years, some of the photos have been printed elsewhere over the years, including a number in our own books.
Obviously, we have decided to republish the B&O series but in a different format . . . on coated paper with an innovative high gloss lithography technique, in one volume and hardbound.
The order of presentation has been changed, running geographically from Jersey City to Chicago and St. Louis. Some captions were mildly edited to adjust to this format, but all are substantially the same as originally published. To our pleasure, we discovered only one error . . . the photo of the 5314 on page 68 of this book is correctly identified as a Plc on this date. In the first edition, we labeled it a P7e. To our horror, we also discovered a small typo ... it has been corrected herein. Of course, we have incorporated new information learned after original publication.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
