T1-IREE generations of the Armstrong family span the years from the early days of George Stephenson to Nationalization,
when the four great railway systems of Britain, built up from small units created by the genius of practical men, backed by the enterprise of their promoters, were taken over by the State and fused into one great organization.
The story of the Armstrongs is largely bound up with that of the Great Western Railway, mainly with the locomotives of the standard gauge section and in particular with those of the Northern Division of that railway.
