The Argent Lumber Company railroad was everything a narrow gauge buff could hope for tiny locomotives, beat-up equipment, weather-worn shops and rickety track in a primeval Deep South setting. When a young Mal Ferrell paid a visit in the summer of 1955, complete with white bucks (see page 13 . . . Pat Boone had nothing on him!), it was already a rolling relic from a bygone era. As Mal puts it, "Argent was . . . Rushton stacks, Spanish moss, a coffee can on the backhead, no air brakes, no minimum wage, no water glass . . . no nothin'!"
