INDEX
FOREWORD
This Report for 1960 is the Eighty-ninth Annual Statistical Report in the series prepared by American Iron and Steel Institute and its predecessor, American Iron and Steel Association, and the Forty-ninth since the series was begun by the Institute.
All indexes of steel production in this Report are based on average production of the three years 1957-1959. In previous reports, indexes were based on average steel production of the three years 1947-1949.
Steel produced by the basic oxygen process in the years 1955 through 1958, which in previous reports was combined with steel produced in electric furnaces, is shown separate in this edition for each of those years.
Some changes from previous reports have been made in the interest of greater usefulness. Chief among those are details covering United States imports and exports of iron and steel products. A table not included in previous reports shows imports of iron and steel products by customs districts for 1959 and 1960.
It is the continued generous cooperation of the many members of the industry and their willingness to file reports that has enabled the Institute to obtain such extensive coverage of statistics on the iron and steel industry. To all those industry members, to both the United States and Canadian government sources of pertinent statistics, and to other organizations and individuals whose invaluable help has materially aided
