PREAMBLE
Whilst compiling this book, I came to realize that it is not only the steam locomotive that has disappeared from everyday life but also the way of life itself. It may well be that affection for these scenes is derived as much by evocations of the period as it is from the steam
train and its environment. I remember the open front door, the bobby on the beat and back streets where children played; a time when a football team could be readily identified by the colours of its strip, or the make of a car by its shape. These were the days of soap-box carts, scooters, Saturday morning pictures and holidays by train. I was fortunate to record this particular era and hope that these photographs convey the `feel' of the times. The steam locomotive epitomises those days but it, along with most of what I have recorded, is now a memory encapsulated for me by the distant sound of a whistle floating on the still night air. Steam was here and gone forever...
