America's New Railroads resumes Mr. Carper's authoritative account of railroading in transition. It vividly depicts the collapse of the Penn Central, which began soon after the ill-fated system's formation. Heartrending photographs show abandoned facilities, washed-out roadbed, and neglected equipment. America's New Railroads is a pictorial essay that describes from a railfan's viewpoint the difficult days of the Penn Central, and then shows, by comparison, the healthy operations of the Chessie System and the Norfolk and Western.
