Few undertakings so thoroughly ignited the spirit of Nineteenth Century America as did the concept of a nationwide railway route. Up to this time travel to and from the developed eastern states to the new territories on the other side of the continent could best be described as an ordeal. The choices were a months-long, tedious wagon trail journey, or an equally long sea voyage around South America's Cape Horn.
Construction of the first transcontinental railroad was undertaken on two fronts, from the western end of the route in Sacramento, California, and from the eastern end in Omaha, Nebraska. Along the way were many delays, incredible hardships, and underhanded financial maneuverings. When at last the two segments of the new railroad were joined in 1869 with a great celebration at Promontory, Utah, a new era of American progress had begun.
This exciting new book commemorates the 125th anniversary of a major milestone in our country's evolution. From construction and early operations to the railroad as it exists today, here is the excitement and drama of America's First Transcontinental Railway, filled with colorful and well-researched information, including a brief look at today's Golden Spike National Historic Site.
