INTRODUCTION
Of course I was very pleased when the American Freedom Train Foundation chose the SP 4449 to power the Bicentennial Museum Special.
I was pleased not only because I am a "Southern Pacific man" but also because my late father, Daniel J. Shea, Sr., operated the 4449 many times as a locomotive engineer on SP's Los Angeles Division. In fact, he made his last run on that class of engine as he retired November 24, 1951, after 42 years with our railroad.
Dad died in 1968, but I can still see him as he would come home from a "run" well done, and I can vividly recall the pride the family felt for the important, exciting, responsible work he was doing. As he gained seniority, Dad was piloting some of Southern Pacific's great "name" passenger trains - the Daylights, the Sunset Limiteds, the Golden States, the Argonauts and the Californians. As a youth, now over 40 years ago, I was inspired by what my Dad did for a living and the way he did it.
