DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Sprawled across half a continent is one of the greatest nations in the world; the United States of America. Though joined together as a cohesive whole, every state is different and has an atmosphere all its own.
The original thirteen colonies, each founded for its own specific purpose, still retain the flavor of England. In these states were fought the battles that set America free from European domination, and at Bunker Hill and Yorktown the fields of war can still be seen while the graceful elegance of another era still survives in the Southern states.
The new nation and her people pushed westward until the boundaries of the French territories were reached. Then, in what has been called the greatest real estate deal in history, American representatives in France bought the entire Louisiana Territory for the sum of just fifteen million dollars. Slowly, the pioneer instinct given to Americans at birth drove them out across the vast western lands in search of a living. Territory after territory entered the fold of statehood until, following a short war with Mexico, the West Coast was reached. The boundaries of the conterminous United States were complete.
Since that time, Alaska and Hawaii have gained their own statehood, adding two more stars to Old Glory, bringing the number to a full fifty. This book reaches out across time and space, revealing the beauties of the nation in a shower of glorious, full color photographs, accompanied by an informative text.
