Share with me the story of a railroad, the city it built, and the men it shaped. This is the story of Altoona and the once-famous Pennsylvania Railroad (PRA). It's a fascinating tale, full of human drama, danger, suspense, triumph, and defeat.
You might say, "But the Pennsylvania Railroad no longer exists." No, it doesn't, but we continue to use many of its tracks, railroad stations, viaducts, bridges, and the all-important tunnels that provide access to New York City. And the spirit that spelled greatness for the railroad still exists. It lingers in the hearts and minds of families whose loved ones - living or dead -worked for the Pennsy. Those workers were veterans of an industrial war. The remarkable degree of hard work and loyalty they accorded their company throughout most of their lives, and the ultimate price untold numbers of them paid, were of such consequence that their sacrifices should not be forgotten.
