Welcome to "Altoona Action". We will begin our journey on the next page at Petersburg, Pennsylvania. This is the location where trains trains could be-rerouted over the Hollidaysburg & Petersburg Secondary and up around Muleshoe Curve on the New Portage Secondary as an alternative to the standard mainline routing through Altoona and around Horseshoe Curve. We will head west and make stops at Spruce Creek and Tyrone before covering one of the most famous railroad cities in the world.
The early portions of the book will consist mainly of photographs, as they tell the story best. As you get acquainted with the area, we will advance into slightly more detailed peeks at a truly incredible stretch of mountain railroad.
We have included photos of operations on the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail so you can see, in one volume, how this region changed over the years. Not only did the paint and the motive power change, but philosophies changed, as well. Towers fell, tunnels were abandoned and tracks were removed. Some areas saw improvement as a result, while others suffered.
In finding benchmarks to base our timetable information, we have chosen the 1st editions of the Penn Central and Conrail timetables, as these came the closest to reflecting the PRR and PC in their final form. They were too new for wholesale changes to have been made. We hope you enjoy this tribute to Altoona in an era of great change.
