Back of the book
The White Pass and Yukon Route is one of the most famous narrow gauge railroads in the world, and J.D. True was an Engineer on the line for more than 40 years.
Relive the experiences of the "Hoghead on the White Pass" in this collection of letters written to relatives, friends and railfans from 1974 until his retirement in 1983. J.D. gives day-to-day accounts of his last decade on the White Pass with himself on the headend, in addition to harking back to the days of steam engines and rotary snowplows.
Along the way he spars with moose, bucks snowslides, pulls a drawbar or two, rides one engine into the canyon, and saves another from running away down the four percent grade.
This is the story of a lifetime "Along the White Pass High Iron," in the words of one of the few who could tell it.
