INTRODUCTION
Bear's Stadium in Denver, the scene of popular, exciting baseball in Western League days, provided an excellent view of the Colorado and Southern yard across the South Platte. Many a pleasant summer evening was spent watching switching operations and a 900 or a big Burlington 6100 back out of the house in preparation for the North Local. A 1945 ride on the Denver Zephyr through a steady Nebraska downpour with a stop at McCook where all attention was given to the raging electrical storm which surrounded us - dropping down to Needles on the Colorado River and stepping off the Eastbound El Capitan into 120 degrees amid Mohave Indians in native dress selling their colorful beads and rugs.
The steady pounding exhaust of a Rio Grande helper through the many tunnels on the very edge of the front range of the Rockies, heard every night if the wind was right. Experiences such as these did much to influence this writer in the area of rail photography. For those who have endeavored to achieve complete satisfaction in this field, neither nature or the elements have stood in their path.
Whether cut off from civilization by a treacherous ground blizzard of a Wyoming winter; facing a scorching, dusty Arizona desert; or setting up for a few night exposures at Alamosa in the still, frigid San Luis Valley at -45 below; the dedicated individual would not pass up the opportunity.
