They looked like huge monsters. They belched sparks and smoke, ran off the rails, and sometimes even exploded. But everyone wanted to ride behind these fast, new steam locomotives.
Soon railroads connected the big eastern cities, and a mad race was on to link them with the far West. As western rail crews blasted a way east through the high mountains, work gangs from the East laid track westward. Each rail crew strove to lay the most track.
They met in Utah, on May 10, 1869. As the last spikethe Golden Spikewas driven in, everybody cheered. The race to span a continent was won.
This is the story of those exciting dangerous daysthe days of the steam trainswhen fortunes were made and lost, and men fought and died to build America's railroads.
